What is Worship?
“Worship” means to give worth to something or someone. Through our worship, we say that God is worth our praise. He deserves our praise for his amazing love and wonderful gifts he has given to us. The greatest of all gifts is salvation through his Son Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 10:25 says, “let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another– and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
“Meeting together” - what we call worship is to build up each other in Christ.
At Trinity, worship follows 4 basic principles:
The Gospel Must Predominate.
Law (which shows us our sins) and Gospel (which shows us our savior) must be in all our services. By looking at the law, we see that we have sinned and deserve punishment now and forever in hell. By looking at the Gospel, we see that Jesus has lived and died for our salvation. Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection are essential to worship. If a worship service has communicated many true things from the Bible, but the good news of salvation through Christ was minimally present, or absent altogether, then that is not worship that helps the people gathered there.
The Means of Grace (the Gospel in Word and Sacrament) must permeate worship.
It also must be communicated in a way that people today can understand. Worship must be reverent (pointing people to Jesus) and it must be relevant (communicating in a way that meets people’s needs).
The People Participate
Church is not a concert. We do not simply sit there and expect to be entertained. Our faith is not just for Sunday mornings. Our entire life is one of responding to God’s love. Our life is our worship. Sunday morning worship should be no different from the rest of the week. When we hear of God’s love and forgiveness, we respond. We receive from God, we respond to God. Worship must allow us all to actively worship our God. People participate in many ways: singing hymns and songs, responsive readings, confessing our faith together, giving our offerings to further God’s kingdom, singing the psalms together, even our posture (standing and sitting at certain times).
We connect with past Christians.
Most of what we do in worship is what Christians have done in worship for 2000 years. The language and style of music certainly has changed from culture to culture and generation to generation. But the basic elements of worship has been the same. Scripture readings, sermon, singing, prayers, the Lord’s Supper, and other parts have always been elements of Christian worship. Besides singing new songs to the Lord (Psalm 96:1), we even sing some of the same songs that Christians have sung for centuries. By doing this, we connect ourselves with countless believers who have gone before us and with many who will come after us.
We use the many gifts God has given to his people.
God has blessed each one of us with unique gifts and talents that he wants us to use to his glory and for the benefit of other people. We try to use as many of those special gifts as possible. Whether that is the ability to play instruments like flute, trumpet, piano, guitar, or percussion, or the ability to draw and paint, or the ability to construct things, whatever the gifts, we try to use them to communicate the Gospel in as many ways as possible.
